Peppermint originated in the Mediterranean region, but is now also cultivated in other countries in Europe, America and Asia. Discoveries show that peppermint has been used since ancient times in Egypt, Greece, Rome, China and Japan. According to Greek myth, a nymph named Mentha was turned into a mint plant by her lover Persephone's wife in a fit of rage. According to Pliny, peppermint was used by the Greeks and Romans to crown feast days. In England, it has been used as a medicinal plant for several centuries.
